The weather was wonderful the morning of March 4, 2006. I awoke about 6:30 am thinking of the hot dogs and the chili sauce-the onions, buns, etc….and mentally trying to make sure everything was either in our cars or ready to put in the cars. I had made lists and remade lists, checked things several times. Even though our home is less than 3 miles from Twin Lakes Park where the Clarksburg Reunion Picnic is held, I didn’t want to have to make a run back to the house for any forgotten food or items. I wanted to have everything I might need…like all the staple guns, the paper for the tables, and plastic for other, the charcoal, foil and sterno to keep the chicken hot.….so many things kept running through my mind. Finally at 9:00 I figured I was ready (or not) so the final loading into the car started.
Thanks also to those who were there at 9:30 am when I arrived and who helped me unload my car….As those attending know, I wasn’t up to 100% that day due to 3 broken toes---I should not have been on my feet but I spent most of 10 hours standing or limping around and I wouldn’t have missed one minute of it.
REGISTRATION
Upon arrival most people were greeted by Barb Warren Williams (WI 1958) and Carol Van Horn Dean (WI 1958) who volunteered to work the registration table. (In above picture-Judy Tetrick signs in) Thanks gals---you did a wonderful job.
They registered 157 people and there were some people who slipped in and weren’t counted but we will never be able to really figure out who was missed but this always happens. The important thing is that many people from Clarksburg and the surrounding area met and spent about 5 or 6 hours reminiscing and enjoying memories together.
My thanks also to the ladies and gentlemen under the direction of Sharon Greitzner Dial (WI 1956) who moved tables around and covered all of the picnic tables for the displays, the food and the dining. (Thanks to Lu Dial---who worked hard even though he isn’t from Clarksburg but we know he wants to be!)
.
Even though it is so much work….I love it….We all have so much fun. It just warms my heart to no end to hear someone say, “Isn’t that so and so coming? I haven’t seen him since high school.” It is great watching people make new friends, reconnect with old friends or discover people to whom they are related or with whom they had that first date or first kiss. I am telling you, the work is 100% worth the outcome!
Many people donated gifts to me for a little raffle….Here I am putting together a little display of the gifts. A list of the donors of the gifts and the winners is at the end of this newsletter.
Around 12:00 (noon) after a lot of visiting with each other, we settled down to a short program.
Above is the beautiful quilt made by Sue Selby Moats of squares made and donated by several people from Clarksburg. I am standing on a picnic table bench with my trusty bull horn and am ready to start the program for the day. I really had fun with that bull horn. Bill took it away and put it in storage as soon as we got back home….I wanted to keep it close at hand to use to direct him around the house. I had a lot of fun saying, “Move it, move it, move it!” LOL I hope I didn’t offend anyone but it was a lot easier than screaming.
After I greeted everyone and told about some of the details of the day, Roger Dean led us in singing "America the Beautiful".
Reverend Bob Jennings former pastor of Nutter Fort Baptist Church blessed the food. And boy that food was great. The hit of the day was the Clarksburg “style” hot dogs and the pepperoni rolls.
Even though I have 3 broken toes, I proceeded to really enjoy myself. My foot only hurt when I stood up or walked and that was most of the day. Below is a picture of me trying to rest the foot for a couple of minutes.
THE QUILT
Above Kitty Sager looks over the “famous quilt”.
Note the WI sports letter in the bottom center---which was donated for the quilt by Augie Malfregeot, the black and white squares were donated by Deedie Swisher Souders. Deedie was ill this year and she and hubby were unable to attend. We missed you and hope you will be back with us next year. Roger Dean (RW 1956) pointed out the fact that he and Carol made the school house (in one of the squares they donated) out of red and gray material in honor of his Alma Mater-RW.
Sue Selby Moats made a wonderful memory quilt. Quilt pieces were made and donated by several different people.
Through Sue’s efforts and her selling tickets for the raffle through the internet, at her 1955 class reunion and at the WI picnic held in August 2005, plus $335.00 worth of tickets sold at the Clarksburg Picnic….she earned $785.00 for the WIN Scholarship
Bill Meredith and several helpers hung the quilt at the picnic to really show it off. Here a few men make some minor adjustments. Bill Meredith is not in this picture! Bud Collins (WI 1955) can be seen peeping around the quilt.
WHO BROUGHT THE WHOLE CHICKENS?
These ladies volunteered to cut up the whole chickens which some people obviously brought by mistake. I think fried chicken pieces would have been easier to eat. But we had a lot of fun joking about the “messy” chickens.
In the background in the flowered top is LaJune Cohen (married to Bernie Cohen (WI 1956) as she talks to Gerry Winerman (married to Jerry Winerman (WI 1957). The Winerman’s have made a winter trip from California for the last two years to join in our fun…we will miss them next year but they have some celebrating to do in California.
Talking over some memories are June Hoffer Albright (WI 1949), Judy Tetrick and Linda Watkins Cooper (WI 1948).
Clara Jason Davis (WI 1959) walks up to greet some of the people arriving at the registration table. In the yellow slacks is Kay Lawson Adair (WI 1958) who is waiting to get her name tag….also in this picture is Pam Wolfe Brown (WI 1960) and Jim Brown (WI 1957).

Sue Ellen Stalnaker Crawford (WI 1970+) our own "Hot Dog Chili Queen". Sue Ellen and hubby, Jack, bring the home made chili sauce for the wonderful West Virginia style hot dogs that we all enjoy each year. Just another taste that brings back those memories of our days in Clarksburg.
I don’t recognize the lady on the left but center is Sharon Wendler Jacobson (WI 1960) and on the right is Pam Wolfe Brown also (WI 1960). There were a lot of pretty ladies from WI 1960’s at the picnic. I hope the word spreads and more come next year.

If you listen to these guys----you would think you grew up underprivileged! These guys made me have Broad Oaks Envy! They had a marvelous time in their youth. They all lived so close together—it was like a brotherhood! Maybe it was the forerunner of the "HOOD" of today! LOL

VICTORY
We were really surprised that so few people were in attendance from Victory. They usually have a larger turn-out…Spread the word next year.
Pictured above are a few of those from VHS….. There were actually more from Victory in attendance than pictured here. I don't know how they could have missed the picture with me yelling in the bullhorn!

Also missing this year was Fred Alvaro who now has a part time pharmaceutical job in Columbus, Ohio and Carolyn White Rector and Bob Rector who live in Sarasota but missed the picnic. We missed Sandi Drummond Hefner and Sallie Holden Day who also live near by but didn’t make it. Someone needs to get them out of the house next year and into the fun!

PICTURES
Many thanks to all who shared their pictures with me for this Special Edition: Barb Warren Williams, Don Sager, Sharon Greitzner Dial, Jim Alvaro, and of course Charlie Means.
Charlie scared all of us last winter when he was very ill. Charlie has helped me out the last two years by volunteering to take the group pictures. I am sorry if I missed any groups, and I know I did. Also, we had a little over one hour for Charlie to take all of the pictures….thus I was hurrying people to and from the picture spot…..that was when I was saying--,"Move it, move it, move it." We did get all the pictures taken in the allotted time and Charlie was on his way.
Pictured below from left to right are: Beverly Allen, wife of Tom Allen (WI 57), she is from Johnstown, Pa.; Kay Lawson Adair ( WI 58); Ann Pears Jones (WI 58) lives in Texas: Sharon Dillmore Smith (WI 58) she and Skip live in Venice, Florida.
MAIL
Roleta, I think this was the best ever and I don't know why but it just seemed that way. I don't know how they keep getting better but they do. I guess the weather was perfect and that really helps. I don't think it was you working harder because you put 100% into it every year. Well do you think Bill worked harder this year?? There was also a few who were there that were not at some of the past picnics. Or maybe Freddie not attending this year made it better. No that definitely was not the reason although I got so tired of answering where he was that I just told them that he was into drugs (which he is with the pharmacy) and they asked no more questions. I really missed him, especially keeping me on schedule and keeping me from getting lost when we went out scanning the area.
I had a wonderful time.
Tell Bill I said hello and love to you both.
From---Jim Alvaro (WI 1956)
Roleta,
Nice party!! It was great to see so many people this year. I especially enjoy seeing Buck Tustin and Don Cinci. We have been good friends since college. Anyway you did a great job again this year, I am sure everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.
Got back home yesterday about 10 PM. Cold and rain here. FL is much better. Headed back to Tampa the end of the month for 10 days, maybe by that time Spring will have sprung here in VA.
Thanks again for a great party. It was good to see you.
Boo Beall (Notre Dame 1958)
Another great picnic by Roleta and Bill Meredith. You all out did yourself. This I think was best ever. It just amazes me the job you all do getting so many people together. There is not enough one can say for all the time and effort you put in along with the great support of Bill. I just want to thank you again and all the lives you have touched.
Love you both,
Bud Collins (WI 1955)
Roleta,
What an absolutely gorgeous day for our Picnic and it does get better and better each year!!!! Thank You!!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!!! Thank You!!!!!!!!! for all that you endeavor to do each year. Participation from as many as possible each year makes your job a bit easier, also.
Hope those toes are feeling better??? When do you see doctor next on these "little friends"???
Finally, I am getting to my desk......have pics yet to get together and send to you. However, first, I would like to thank Carol VanHorn Dean for the "Quillow" that I won!!!! Yea!!!!!! I have been wanting one of those so that I could get a "pattern" and make a few!!! If you have her e-mail I sure would appreciate your sending it to me!!!
I have sent check for WIN Scholarship Fund in memory of my classmate, Toni (Davis) Bailey, '56, and husband "Bongo" . You should receive it probably Monday.
Thanking God for YOU!!! (little did I know way back, when we were playing at Stealey Playground, that you would be the one to bring everyone back together again through the WI Newsletter)
Love & Blessings,
Sherry Greitzner Dial (WI 1956)
Great picnic. I am looking forward to it next year.
Jay Sharp (WI 1959)
Pam took several pictures and I took a few. We will gladly share them as soon as I get them downloaded from the camera.
It was a beautiful day and another great job on your part. (This includes Bill and others who helped.)
Jim Brown (WI 1957)
Dear Roleta,
Another outstanding picnic this year! The weather was perfect! Attendance was close to 200. Food is always delicious. Everyone was friendly and seemed to enjoy themselves. And what a wonderful way to meet new acquaintenances!!
"America the Beautiful" was sung by Roger Dean at the opening of the "Clarksburg Picnic" which sets the event and I feel reflects our alumni unity.
Three of my South Carolina friends attended the picnic as guests. Sue Brown Gillmore who now lives in Sarasota, Marilyn Mack visiting her friend, and Francis who also has a home in Sarasota. I received an email from two commenting "Thanks for asking us to attend your reunion. You have nice classmates and friends. Everyone was so friendly and the food was outstanding."
That makes me feel proud of my home town Clarksburg, our community and school spirit.
Barbara Warren Williams has had some serious health problems going on, so I was very happy to see she was able to attend the reunion this year.
Ironically, the picture of Barbara and me working the registration and Mere Gurson Schwartz were childhood friends and neighbors growing up.
What a beautiful job Sue Selby created with the quilt squares. To take our individual squares, sew borders around each, arrange them and with a finishing touch produce an amazing piece of art!
And Roleta, I don't know how you were able to do all that you did with your broken toes. I know they must have been causing you a great deal of pain, but that didn't stop you. You pulled off another successful picnic.
Bravo!
Carol VanHorn Dean (WI 1958)
THE FOOD WE HAD TO EAT WAS MARVELOUS….
Bill Bryan (RW 1957) had attended the picnic last year; however, he and wife moved from Florida. A combination of the wife not liking the hot summers and the hurricanes of the last couple of years forced them north. They moved to Ashville, NC area. Bill wrote that he and his wife are "half backs"—half way back to WV from Florida. He really enjoyed himself at the 2005 picnic and sent us 5 dozen pepperoni rolls to enjoy at the picnic even though he couldn’t be there. Those rolls disappeared really quickly.
Below is a picture of me putting the pepperoni rolls from Bill Bryan (RW 1957) on the food table.
RECIPES
The food brought to the picnic was wonderful. Thanks to all who brought such marvelous food, there again was plenty. Thanks to some of the "motel people" who provided the chicken again this year. It was enjoyed! I had two new food experiences. One was a slaw made with Ramen noodles…this was really good…and the other was the sort of wet cornbread with corn in it. I would love to have the "wet cornbread" recipe to share. If you have it please send it to Roleta1@aol.com. If you don’t want it shared in the newsletter---please tell me but also, please share it with me…I loved that "stuff". I did ask around for the recipe for the slaw and George "Bill" Scholl (WI 1952) shared it—See below:
I understand you ask Vivian Dennison, whom I was raised close to, about the Broccoli Slaw that my wife, Ginny , took to the reunion today. Since I have it saved on a floppy, I said I would get it to you.
BROCCOLI SLAW
1 cup oil
1/3 cup vinegar
½ cup sugar
2 pkg beef seasoning (from Ramen noodles)
Mix above together
BLEND THE FOLLOWING
1 pkg broccoli slaw
1 cup toasted almonds
1 cup sunflower seeds
2 pkg Ramen noodles crushed
1 bunch chopped green onions
Pour dressing over & marinate
We want to thank you for another outstanding reunion. We look forward to them each year. (just wish I had won the quilt)

AND THE WINNER IS:
Pat Hardman Nicholson (WI 1956) won the quilt. She loves it and wrote to say it arrived safely and she will find a special place in her home to display it. You have seen the pictures and you know that it was a work of art and included many memories. Thanks to Sue Selby Moats for all the time she donated to make this quilt…and to all of you who used your talent and donated squares for the quilt. If you had not helped Sue she would not have been able to accomplish as much as she did for the WIN Scholarship.
