MEMORIES
submitted by: Dolores Costlow Wall
WI Class of 1958

Dewaa@aol.com

A memory -- I remember snow days back in high school. We didn't get days off, we trudged up that hill through snow pretty deep. One step up, two sliding back down. Each time they call off school around here, I think--"They don't know what snow is!!"
And the front steps and the "boys' hall and the 'girls' hall, and those HUGE study halls. I don't think they have traditions like that anymore. I don't remember my sons having anything like that and that was so special.
Remember the elevator tickets?? So gullible!!
I was in band -- the football games were so special. We froze, but we had fun. I actually got a background in football by going to them and am now a big fan. I am a Pittsburgh Steeler fan, so have not enjoyed the last couple of years. "Wait till NEXT year!!" LOL

ANNOUNCEMENT
submitted by: Jean Wells Himmel
dan-jeanhimmel@erols.com

Roleta,

We have two new-baby news items - one a little late.

On Feb 13, Dan's granddaughter had her second child, first son, so this is our second great-grandchild. They live close to us so we get to see Joseph and his sister Trinity (age 3) pretty often.

On March 20, my son Jeff's wife Melissa had their second child and second son, Bennett. They live outside of Cleveland, OH, so we haven't seen this new one yet. Their first, Matthew, is 22 months old. My daughter has two daughters and my son has two sons; some symmetry there.

Thanks for all the work you do on keeping us up to date on each other.

Jean Wells Himmel

LETTERS FROM CLASSMATES

Hi Roleta,
Thanks so much for the March Newsletter, esp. the gig about my correct e-mail address. As a result, I just heard from Carol VanHorn (WI '58). She lived a block or so from me, and we grew up together. I haven't seen or heard from her since high school, so we shared some memories.

I'm going to be in Bridgeport sometime soon visiting my Mom and plan to stop by John Murhpy's old house at Maple Lake in hopes of getting a lead on him. It's a long shot after all these years, but I'll give it a try. My Mom also has a good friend who has lived at the lake for years - maybe she will be helpful.

I was sadden to hear about Bill Baber. Back when - I had a morning paper route which went through Billy's neighborhood and had to get up early each morning to complete it. Bill would sometimes help me out when I was running late. I'll always remember him as being well mannered and simply a very nice guy.

Get back to soon.

Regards, Habie

Hi Roleta

Our classmate, Judi Davis Ware, who lives in Volga, WV, has a very interesting hobby--She has gone to the "Dogs". In a nice way, that is. Judi has a Welsh Springer Spaniel named "Ripple" that has attracted national attention . "Ripple" competed in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show held this February in Madison Square Garden. She did win a ribbon and medallion for "Best of Opposite Sex".

There was a nice article about the dog and Judi in the March 11, 2000 Clarksburg Exponent Telegram. Judi is very proud of her gorgeous dog. I can tell you that having a puppy is a big job since I just came home from "grandson and puppy sitting" for my daughter.

Have a nice day.

Phyllis Fittro Brown

Hello!!!!
My address is Cheryll Rasmussen, PO Box 5, Yachats, Oregon 97498-0005.

This is a very tiny town on the Oregon coast. I live in a very small cottage just a few steps from the Pacific Ocean. Most of the locals take a glass of wine or beer each evening down to the ocean to watch the sunsets. The highlight of our day!! I'm still working for a large medical group called Legacy. My office is located in Waldport just a few miles north of Yachats. I have missed so much during the years due to moves, marriages, children but have often thought of past friends. Needless to say, I was delighted in finding this web site.

At last count I have 14 grandchildren. Some are here in the Northwest and some are back East. (I had 5 children) .......we are prolific! I am divorced, sorry to say, but much for the better. There are several people I'd like to know where in the heck they are, perhaps you can help

Dorothy (Dotti) Taggart Rutan, I think she was a year ahead of us and one of my neighbors on Broaddus Ave. Also Skip Martin who I dated for several years, I believe his full name was Franklin Pierce Martin III, Barbara Johnston, Brenda Martino, I may think of more names later on

Thanks Cheryll (Sheri Rasmussen) 541-547-5262 Home phone

One of our fellow classmates could not join us in the chat room tonight, so I am forwarding his thoughts. In response:

James Fragale writes:

No time for that. Got a new agent, working on a new screenplay. Try to workout when I can. If Kay Lawson joins in give her my love and tell her she made the reunion for me. I walked in with Martha Kinney, Kay came up to me, looked me up and down and said, "How did I ever miss you?" Made my day, I'll tell you. Good luck with your chat room. Sounds like fun to me. Hope some good things surface.

Before you read this letter I wish to give you some hi lights as to how this classmate was found. Loretta Mayer registered in the www.classmates site. I checked this site, saw her name so I sent a letter to all other classmates who had also registered.

I wanted to see if any had paid the $25.00 that enabled one to get other benefits. I heard from all but 2 of the classmates. All were willing to help us find our classmate.

Martha Frey Dase even asked other friends to help. Joy Gregorie was a good friend of Loretta's in High School and gave us a hint that she thought Loretta's family was in N.J. I told this to Phil Gloss and he did his detective work and came up with a Stephen and Loretta Brinkman in Phillipsburg, N.J. He was going to pursue this through other channels. Before this happened, I received an IM on Friday the 31st from Joy asking if we had any information on Loretta. I gave her the names and city in N.J. and asked her if she wanted to try telephoning to see if it was our Loretta. Sure enough, we found Loretta. Many thanks to all who helped. Below is the letter from a very happy Joy Gregorie Stalnaker.

Between the tears:

Loretta Brickman
206 Stonehenge Drive
Phillipsburg, NJ
08865-2050
Phone: 908-454-5099

e-mail: Lorettarp@webtv.net

Loretta is a political activist and spends lots of time in DC. She just finished a term on the NJ State Board of Pharmacy; is between jobs now. Has two sons Joseph, 34, and Eric, 31. Joseph is in medical school and will be married on Mother's Day; Eric has his masters degree and is working for Prudential.

She had registered on classmates.com so she could find me! Thanks, everyone, for giving me back some of my high school years and allowing me to continue this long-lost friendship.

Joy

TRAVELING
submitted by: Roleta Smith Meredith
ROLETA1@aol.com

We recently returned to Florida after a nice cruise aboard the Ocean Princess to the southern Caribbean. It was our sixth Caribbean cruise and my least favorite. Oh, the Princess cruise lines is the best but the islands were not very interesting. We flew from Tampa, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico where we boarded the ship. From San Juan we traveled a day and a half to Port of Spain, Trinidad , just off the coast of Venezuela. Trinidad was celebrating Carnival and we were told that it might not be safe to venture too far into town. Carnival was amazing and loud. Next stop was Barbados where we found the town we visited to be just set up for tourists. From there we traveled to Antigua and to tell the truth, it looked like all of the rest of the islands. One tee shirt we saw expressed it perfectly "SAME S--- DIFFERENT ISLAND". Next we sailed into Martinique which is French...enough said! Then on to St. Thomas, one of my favorites in the Caribbean....it is a US Virgin Island. Then back to San Juan for a day of traveling around to some of our favorite spots. As usual it is always great to return home....there is no place on earth like the good old USA!!!!!

A MUCH NEEDED IMPROVEMENT
submitted by: Bob Davis
davis29063@aol.com

A MUCH NEEDED IMPROVEMENT: I have given Bob the title "KEEPER OF THE E-MAIL ADDRESS RECORDS". As many of you know it is great to have our records held by several different people in case one loses a file. Bob has done a great job of making a nice record for all of us to use. This is a much needed improvement and now you can copy and paste these someplace handy. If there are any corrections or additions, please either contact Bob or I. We have worked back and forth on editing this for most of the month. There are now 67 Classmates of the Class of 1959 listed and 17 friends of the class who wish to be included.

SPRING POEM
submitted by: Tom Marshall
Marshall@robert-morris.edu

T. Nash
I. Spring

SPRING, the sweet Spring, is the year's pleasant king;
Then blooms each thing, then maids dance in a ring,
Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing,
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

The palm and may make country houses gay,
5 Lambs frisk and play, the shepherds pipe all day,
And we hear aye birds tune this merry lay,
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo.

The fields breathe sweet, the daisies kiss our feet,
Young lovers meet, old wives a-sunning sit,
10 In every street these tunes our ears do greet,
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

Spring! the sweet Spring!
